Bioshock 2 will star Big Daddy, feature "Big Sister"

Bioshock 2's Big Sister

Details have finally surfaced (haw haw) for the long-anticipated sequel to 2K Boston's ambitious, award-winning 2007 first-person shooter Bioshock, thanks to a world exclusive in this month's issue of GameInformer Magazine.

According to the magazine, players will play as the "first" Big Daddy, who must fight other Big Daddies in order to acquire a Little Sister. There will also be a new type of enemy called a "Big Sister," which is (as the name suggests) a female version of the Big Daddy. It's faster, and according to the picture at right, it also looks considerably more deadly. In the process of your adventure, you will be able to use the Big Daddy's trademark drill weapon, as well as the plasmids that made up much of the first Bioshock's gameplay.

It's nice to see that 2K is trying something a little easier to digest than a linear sequel, since it probably would have really diluted the franchise. While no sequel at all would have best preserved the spirit of the game, I think that this is a pretty good way of making a second Bioshock game without devaluing the unique playing experience from the first. Who knows, maybe this new game (presumably a prequel) will provide a deeper investigation of Rapture's founder Andrew Ryan, undoubtedly the most fascinating character in the first game.

Aliens: Colonial Marines, Others Revealed in March GI [EDIT 1]

Aliens: Colonial Marines The March issue of GameInformer magazine just arrived at my doorstep, with a big, ugly xenomorph head staring out at me. After shooting it out the airlock, I quickly proceeded to read GI's special on Aliens: Colonial Marines, SEGA and Gearbox Software's newest iteration in the iconic science-fiction horror franchise.

Colonial Marines will take place long after the deaths of the main characters of James Cameron's Aliens film (including Ripley), and will follow the story of four new marines. Sent to investigate the spaceship Sulaco, you will have to survive through the inevitable Alien attacks and nerve-crushing bouts of fear.

The developers are creating a world ripped directly from the film, and they hope to maintain a level of character development, alien design, and terror consistent with Cameron's film.

The game supports up to 4-player online co-operative play, and will release for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC in early 2009 (EDIT: now it's '08). Also included in this month's issue of GameInformer are specials on Champions Online (a new superheroes MMO) and Red Faction: Guerilla (the sequel to the cult classic FPS).

EDIT 1: SEGA just pushed the release date up to "late 2008."

Resistance 2 announced, features to make your head asplode

Yeah, you heard right. A NeoGAF poster has leaked, from his recently arrived February copy of GameInformer, details on the sequel to critically praised Playstation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man.

The leaked specs for Resistance 2 include a single-player campaign and a separate cooperative campaign (2-player local, 8-player online), a 60-player online mode with dedicated servers, classes, and VoIP, and stat-tracking/community features using MyResistance.net.

The info is looking pretty sweet at the moment, and I can't wait to get my hands on the latest issue of the magazine. I don't own a PS3, and hence have never played Resistance, but the sequel is giving me the jealousy pangs towards all, you know, five of you that did buy one. With Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance 2 on the horizon, the PS3 looks to be making a strong comeback in the year 2008, with a nice, balanced mix of exclusives.
