"This Week in Ani-Gamers," Newsletter goes monthly

Our sidebar poll ended with a rather small number of votes, so I didn't feel like there was enough data to really get a consensus on what our readers want to see for the new column. Still, I did my best to combine my personal opinion and the votes from the poll. As such, I've decided to move This Week in Ani-Gamers (and its corresponding newsletter) to a monthly format. For the very perceptive among you, you might realize that this will necessitate a name change. Yep, the new column will be called "This Month in Ani-Gamers," seeing as it's, you know, monthly.

All future entries will follow the same general format as they always have: an editorial note at the beginning about what's new at Ani-Gamers, followed by links to the articles posted over the course of the month, and a list of upcoming articles.

For anybody interested in signing up to receive "This Month in Ani-Gamers" through our email newsletter, click here.

Yep, I guess I'm late yet again. On that note, working on this column every week has gotten me thinking: Do you guys really want to have an article every week going over the latest posts? Would you prefer to simply use the front page and the sidebar links as your guides to the newest content on Ani-Gamers, or do you want to have a post about it every week? Do you prefer for me to give commentary at the beginning of the "This Week" posts, or would you like a streamlined list of links? Maybe a monthly rather than weekly format?

To make things easy, I've set up a poll on the sidebar, so please let me know what format you'd rather see. If you want to further explain your opinion, feel free to use the comments section of this post, or email me at evanm@anigamers.com.

Welcome to a new year here at Ani-Gamers. Last year was pretty fantastic for our site, as you can read in our "Best of Ani-Gamers" post. 2009 is gonna be yet another amazing year, so I hope that you'll all continue to read our blog going into the future.

Next week we'll finally be getting into our "Best of 2008" awards for anime, manga, and video games. The votes have all been tallied, and the staff is in the process of writing up our blurbs for each winner. Look for the three "Best of 08" articles to drop sometime next weekend. As for you guys, if you've got any favorite stuff of 2008 that you want to tell us about, send us an email!

I hope everybody had a Merry Christmas, full of fun, family, and anime/manga/game-related presents. Head to the comments for this post to let us know what gifts you got. As for what's going on here at the site, we've had a few developments this past week. For one, the Ani-Gamers Podcast finally hit double digits with the release of episode #010. Second, we traded some blogroll links with the folks over at the Reverse Thieves anime blog and the Joystiq Podcast Appreciation Group Podcast. (Yes, a podcast about a fanclub about a podcast)

Finally, keep an eye out for news about our "Best of 2008" awards. We're currently compiling staff votes and considering a format, so a blog post about it should be up by next week. Until then, head past the break for the awesome reviews and such that we published this week.

The theme for this week was definitely the update to Ani-Gamers version 2.2. As the holiday season kicked into full gear, and my own personal work reached a crescendo, I suddenly found the time (and sheer force of will) to sit down for half a day and implement the latest update. Wow, that sentence sounds like a movie trailer, right? Anyway, on to business.

This week's non-update-related articles are simply two pieces by staff writers MitchyD and Uncle Yo. Mitchy wrote an extensive news post about the launch of Nintendo's North American branch of "Club Nintendo," and Karl published a spectacular review of Mamoru Oshii's newest thought-provoking, sleep-inducing film, The Sky Crawlers.

This will be the last entry in this column before everybody (in America at least) is off from school/work for that not-so-secular holiday break. So, I'd like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season, whatever it is that you're celebrating this year.

But before you get to all of that present-wrapping business, make sure that you check out the latest posts after the break.

A good news week? Implausible! Nevertheless, it seems that this week had a pretty fair showing of news. The big story is of course the surprise launch of Playstation Home, which caught many (including Sony) quite unawares. Then there's some serious business, with Carl Horn and Jason Thompson's fantastic editorials over on ANN about the Christopher Handley manga obscenity trial.

The redesign is going swimmingly, so I think that we're on track to release by the end of the year. Don't worry, we won't pull a Sony and tell you that it launches tomorrow - there will be fair warning before we shut down the site and set up the new look.

Well, it looks like that's it for this week. Keep reading, and if you like us, tell your friends about us! We'll give you a present for doing it. We promise. That present may or may not be this week's posts, which are wrapped up in a neat bow directly after the break.

Oy, I'm rather sorry about the slowdown in articles, but I've had some big personal projects catching up with me in the past week or so. Still, the content will keep coming, so you can look forward to some good stuff in the coming weeks. Among the posts in the pipeline is Ani-Gamers Podcast #009, in which Mitchy and I review Mirror's Edge. Plus, a Far Cry 2 review will be up as soon as I'm done with the game. Oh, and here's a thought. If you want us to write about something, talk about it on the podcast, or whatever, shoot me an email at editor@anigamers.com (or use our contact form). Your comments are always welcome.

As for this week, I did a Far Cry 2 writeup and finally published Uncle Yo's Ryoko's Case Files review. Check out the goods after the break.

This week Ani-Gamers was home to the new Everygamer column and my lovingly-crafted Mirror's Edge review. In terms of site-related news, we've gotten rid of our old review score style for the Mirror's Edge review and all future reviews. Make sure you check that post out so you don't miss out on the change.

Of course, I hope everybody had a happy Thanksgiving weekend. I sure did, as I stayed at my aunt's country house, read Black Jack volume 1, and played a ton of The World Ends with You. What anime, manga, and games did you guys occupy your time with this weekend? This week was pretty big for us. Not only did we usher in a new staff member, Ink, and his new column, "Otakudemia," but we also reported on the groundbreaking announcement about the Naruto fansub situation: popular fansubbing group Dattebayo will no longer be producing Naruto fansubs as of January 15, when the official Viz streaming service will catch up with the Japanese broadcast.

Not only that, but there are great things going on behind the scenes. Ani-Gamers Podcast #008 and #009 are both recorded and in the process of being edited, so they should both be out in a few weeks. Not only that, but the new layout is coming along rather well. Oh, and I just realized something awesome yesterday: Google search "anime game blog" or "anime game podcast." See that? The saga of Ani-Gamers Podcast #007 has finally come to an end, as you can now listen to the month-old episode that made itself incredibly hard to record. Other than that, Karl and I reviewed the anime Basilisk and Texhnolyze respectively, and a new writer, Ink, is joining our team.

Some of you might have noticed the new ads on the left sidebar. Don't you worry, Ani-Gamers isn't "selling out" or anything. I have installed advertising through Google and Project Wonderful so that Ani-Gamers can, in the future, pay its writers and afford things like travel expenses. A new site update that I have in the works will not only increase overall usability, but will also better (i.e. less intrusively) utilize our ad space. Look forward to it.

Politics, video games, anime cons! This season is definitely heating up, but we keep on writing as best as we can here at Ani-Gamers. I just got back from MangaNEXT on Saturday, so expect some coverage (and a podcast episode) to be up in the next week. Oh, and I'm still working through publishing some of Uncle Yo and Pigeonflu's old reviews, so keep your eyes open for those.

As for the ongoing saga of Ani-Gamers Podcast #007, it sort of... died. GarageBand crapped out on me after two failed recordings, so I think episode 7 might just turn into a 10-minute compilation of the best quotes of the episode. I'm not editing that crap all over again. Not to worry, the next "real" episode, straight from MangaNEXT, is on its way!

No news this week, perhaps because the holiday games onslaught is starting to take its toll on our writing abilities. Still, I wrote two feature articles, including the long in coming article about Cartoon Network's Toonami block and my con report for the New York Anime Festival 2008. Uncle Yo reviewed yet another series whose image might get you in trouble at work. Dominion Tank Police, featuring two catgirl strippers on the front cover, is some classic 1980's Masamune Shirow action, so read up on it in Uncle Yo's review!

Last time I mentioned that Ani-Gamers Podcast #007 was in the works. Yeah, well Pigeonflu and I had some trouble with the podcast, but I think we've got something ready for next episode. Full details of our kerrrazy adventures will be contained in our next episode. As for this week, the small amount of news articles is actually a little misleading, since one of our new features - News Briefs - actually contains multiple news articles in one for the sake of quick and easy-to-read reporting.

Next week we should be back on the horse with reviews, but as usual, I make no promises. (Don't make 'em and you can't break 'em!) This week has Mnemosyne, an anime about "Boobies! Bondage! Bloodshed!" (Karl's words, not mine) Make sure you read Uncle Yo's shame-littered review of this shameless OVA.

This was some slow week for the site! I'm not quite sure what happened, but we ended up with no reviews and only a couple news bites. Not to worry, Ani-Gamers Podcast #007 is in the works, and as you can see under the "On Deck" heading below, there are a lot of reviews coming up soon.

On the topic of the podcast, we almost had an episode ready for you yesterday, but some recording problems came up and everything got shot to hell. We're working on recording a new version of episode 007, containing a debate between MitchyD and I about Shadow of the Colossus, so look forward to that.

Well, it's been a miserable week for me, what with New York Anime Festival "con plague" hitting me over the head in the past few days with a runny nose, sore throat, and the works. Not only that, but things have been going crazy (in both good and bad ways) behind the scenes here at Ani-Gamers. Two of our hard-working contributors: Maxwell "Pigeonflu" McGee and Mitchell "MitchyD" Dyer are now writing for GamePro magazine! Congratulations to both of you!

Yeah, I know that this means less stuff for us here at Ani-Gamers, but I'm sure that I'm not the only one looking forward to the new GamePro reviews section. Putting that aside, make sure to check out all three of this week's reviews on the site. We've got an anime, a manga, and a video game, and each review is written by a different author. How's that for variety?

Well, I missed a couple weeks back there, but no matter! Even during the hectic, crazy New York Anime Festival, I've finally found the time to get back on the horse and write This Week once again. School has begun, but Ani-Gamers is unhindered! This week brings mostly gaming news, and Uncle Yo's review of the little-appreciated anime Wrath of the Ninja - The Yotoden Movie. The most important post of this week? Ani-Gamers Podcast #005. Uncle Yo and I reviewed Ghost Hound, so you'd better listen to that episode.

Oh, and I'm sure you guys have already forgotten this, but version 2.1 is technically still in (slow) progress. There are articles to be moved and backend things to be worked out, but expect the official numerical change soon.

Here it is, the end of summer. Most of our staff, students themselves, have returned or are returning to school this week, so I'd like to wish any student reading this good luck in the coming year. As for the past week, things got a bit slower with people preparing for or getting situated at school. Even so, LGC kept on truckin' with Left 4 Dead's delay, Everyday Shooter and Meteos got re-releases, and Madhouse began preparations to reinvent Iron Man.

Meanwhile in review-land, we saw my own long-in-coming Fushigi Yuugi manga review (hint: it's baaaad) and Pigeonflu's review of Boom Blox for the Wii (hint: it's awesomeeee).

Next week, you can expect a new podcast episode from Uncle Yo and I, reviewing Ghost Hound. Check out this week's posts after the break.

This Week in Ani-Gamers ~ 8.17-24.08

Hey guys. I hope you're liking the new Ani-Gamers. Our blog format has allowed for much more streamlined publishing of articles, and our staff is working harder than ever to make this the best website for anime, manga, and video games. I'm definitely enjoying working with everybody here, so I hope our enthusiasm shows in our writing.

This week's announced titles and release dates include Valkyria Chronicles on November 11th, a Fullmetal Alchemist sequel anime, Silent Hill: Homecoming for PC, Fallout 3 in October, and a short parody anime based on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. For those looking for new manga, Shueisha is providing an English version of Bakuman (from the creators of Death Note) absolutely for free on their site.

MitchyD and Uncle Yo also pulled through in the reviews department with Osamu Tezuka's MW and the recent anime Kure-nai.

You'll notice a couple of this week's posts are missing. That is because, like Pigeonflu's column, "Up for Download" (check out this week's entry!), "This Week" will be streamlining so as to only focus on the big stories of the week. Check 'em out after the break.
