Bandai Acquires Lucky Star

Lucky Star Bandai snuck a teaser trailer into their Haruhi volume 4 DVD that reveals the not-so-surprising news that Bandai Entertainment has acquired the licensing rights to the school life comedy Lucky Star. The extremely popular series, created by Kyoto Animation (of Haruhi fame), was a natural fit for Bandai, whose license of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has achieved fairly marked success in the States.

Aaaand in related news, Bandai reveals their secret plan to milk rabid KyoAni fanboys of every cent left in their pockets. Their secret weapon of mass fanstruction is of course their addictive J-pop dances.

Resident Evil CG Anime Revealed

CAPCOM and Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced a partnership in which they will work together to create Biohazard: Degeneration, a computer-animated film based in the Resident Evil (called Biohazard in Japan) universe. Sony, who produced the live-action ResEvil movies, will also produce this film. The movie will be an original story, so the inclusion of characters like Leon Kennedy has not been confirmed or denied.

While Resident Evil has had a somewhat difficult time with the whole movie thing, this could potentially turn out good. After all, Advent Children was fairly popular, and it was also a game-to-CG-movie adaptation. In addition, Resident Evil 4 has already established a visual style that could easily move over into Degeneration.

Dojo Day: Penguins, Targets, and Pictochat...

The Dreamland Trio Oh my! This week's Smash Dojo has left us with some new and exciting information, including a pleasantly plump penguin in a royal costume, a target testing system that appeared in the previous games, and a doodle-like, Nintendo DS-based stage. Welcome to Dojo Day!

PictoChat: This stage, I have to say is one of the most interesting thus far. The stage is based off of the wireless doodling and chatting software on Nintendo’s latest handheld system, the DS. The stage is normally flat, but soon a random sketch will appear on the screen, and that screen automatically comes to life as platforms, moving objects, and drawings that have effects like flames or someone blowing the characters away.

Donkey Kong Makes his Stand: Uh oh! It seems that Bowser’s minions have stolen all of DK’s precious bananas. This is the cinematic that begins Donkey Kong’s journey in Adventure Mode. And this time, he’s not alone. His trusty sidekick, Diddy Kong has his back. Together, they’re ready for anything!

STADIUM: Target Smash!: Returning from the previous installments, this mode has characters breaking 10 targets in a limited amount of time. However, this time all of the target challenges are outdoors and there will only be five different target stages, so character-specific stages for this mode have been sacked. Another tidbit of information Sakurai announced is that you will be able to record up to three minutes of Brawl footage to replay later!

King Dedede: Yet another new character has appeared. And completing the Dreamland trio is King Dedede, brought into the Brawl battlefield by his trusted Waddle Dees. This self-proclaimed king of Dreamland has been sought out as a character since the first Super Smash Bros., he was cut from Super Smash Bros. Melee due to time. Finally, he makes his debut in Brawl as one of the heavyweight characters who delivers quite the punch.

King Dedede: Special Moves:
UP Special Move: Super Dedede Jump: In this attack, Dedede jumps extremely high up, and then comes crashing down with his mallet in hand. This is similar to Kirby’s up special move from the previous games. An interesting part of this attack is that when Dedede comes crashing down, he hits up stars from the ground, for other players to use. However, this attack could be deadly, as it renders Dedede vulnerable for a moment after he hits the ground.
SIDE Special Move: Waddle Dee Toss: This is similar to a child’s game of water balloon toss, or more like Peach’s Vegetable attack and Link’s Bomb attack. Dedede grabs a Waddle Dee from out of nowhere and can choose to carry it around or throw it at an enemy. When the Waddle Dee is thrown, it continues to walk around the stage, similar to Mr. Saturn, for Dedede or another character to pick up and throw again. Dedede can also pull out a Waddle Doo or Gordo too, which results in different effects when thrown. The Waddle Doos will just shoot beams out from wherever they land, and the Gordo will just be its spiky self as it just lays there, waiting for characters to nonchalantly walk into it and take damage.
DOWN Special Move: Jet Hammer: In this attack, Dedede’s mallet reveals a mechanized jet engine hidden underneath. When charged, this attack accelerates and strengthens Dedede’s mallet swing, smacking anyone around him. However, if you charge it too long, it will explode and cause damage to poor Dedede.

The most interesting pieces of news this week was definitely the inclusion of a PictoChat stage and King Dedede. King Dedede sounds like an interesting character and I’m glad to see more Kirby characters in the game, although this may be the last one. The PictoChat idea looks cool, and I’m excited to see what other drawings show up in the stage. The Donkey Kong video, though it looked cool, was a little disappointing. The video also shows that Dixie Kong will most likely not a playable character. If she was, I’m sure she would have shown up in the video, fighting alongside DK and Diddy Kong. However, don’t lose faith, because she may just show up as an Assist Trophy. This has been another installment of Dojo Day, and be sure to tune in next week!

Wright: Wii Is Only "Next-Gen" Console

In an interview with the UK's Guardian, Will Wright (creator of The Sims and the ambitious, soon-to-be-released Spore) made a bold claim about Nintendo's bestselling Wii console. In addition to some quite interesting comments on the state of the gaming industry and his opinions on video game violence and education in games, Wright talked about what next-gen meant.

"The only next gen system I've seen is the Wii – the PS3 and the Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement. But the Wii feels like a major jump – not that the graphics are more powerful, but that it hits a completely different demographic. In some sense I see the Wii as the most significant thing that's happened, at least on the console side, in quite a while.

This is the sort of strange dichotomy we are constantly seeing with game developers' opinions on the Wii. When Spore developers are throwing around claims of duct-taped Gamecubes, its startling to see the game's director telling people that he thinks the Wii is more important than the PS3 or Xbox 360. It seems however, that almost everyone who has an opinion on the Wii, from the gamers to the game developers, has a strong opinion on it. Either they love it or they hate it.

I personally agree with Wright's statement. I own both a Wii and an Xbox 360, so I've got a bit of perspective on it. While the 360 is great, and I still love to play it (as I would love to play a PS3 if I had one), I feel that the Wii has been a much more unique experience than anything I've played on 360. The Wii doesn't have many games right now, but its ability to bring in casual and non-gamers, and its new way of controlling games, makes for a potentially industry-changing console.

While Wright's comments on the Wii were the most newsworthy, he also made some very insightful comments on his opinion of how the gaming industry needs to evolve, how education can be integrated into games, and his philosophy when it comes to game design. It's a really good read, even if you want to throw your SIXAXIS at Wright's face and then chainsaw him to death Gears-style for his mortal insults.

Dojo Day: Team Rocket Edition

Meowth Prepare for trouble! Make it double! To protect the world from devastation! To unite all peoples within our nation! To denounce the evils of truth and love! To extend our reach to the stars above! Vampt Vo! Oracle! Dojo Day, blast off at the speed of light! Surrender now or prepare to fight! MEEEOWTH That's right!

New Pork City: More Mother 3? Oh baby! This stage looks incredible. With the familiar gimmicks and moving platforms from stages like Rainbow Cruise, New Pork City at first seems like a generic and unintersting stage. However, it's much more massive than it originally looks. (It might even be bigger than Hyrule Castle) A huge stage like that should be a lot of fun.

STADIUM: Home-Run Contest: Ready to beat another helpless Sandbag as he tries in vain to scream for help? This time, the infamously addicting Home-Run Contest has a shield that will stop weak shots from knocking the sandbag off the platform, hence ending the ultimate bane of Home-Run Contest addicts. Plus, it is playable with two players in both alternating and tag-team mode. And just to add to the craziness, both of these modes can be played online.

How to use the Wii Remote: The mysterious Wiimote control scheme is finally unveiled in this post. The 2 button attacks, 1 button does special moves, and the d-pad moves, as expected. However, the strange parts come in with the other buttons. The A button is used for taunts, the B trigger is for shields and doding (before you whip out your Wiimotes to test, I already tried and its not as awkward as it seems), and either the - button or shield+attack will grab. Also, to pick up a Smash Ball, just hit it. Then, to activate your Final Smash, simply press 1. Finally, at E for All, the game will be playable with the Wiimote. I assume, since Nintendo wants to bring in casual gamers, that will be the only option there.

Meowth: This classic Pokemon returns at long last from the original Smash Bros., complete with his coin-shooting move "Pay Day."

Little Mac: This retro stuff is pretty sweet. Little Mac from the classic Nintendo arcade game Punch-Out! is an Assist Trophy, and (predictably) runs around punching people. Punch-Out Wii? Come on Nintendo, you know you want to make it!

Peach-Final Smash: A Peach-themed frame descends around the screen, and Peach starts dancing. Everyone falls asleep, and health-regenerating peaches fall into the stage. Peach can then attack her enemies or eat the peaches.

Of course, the big news for this week is the new Home-Run Contest modes. The online component is somewhat misleading though. If Nintendo is going to give us online modes for everything from the Home-Run Contest to the Subspace Emissary, why would they cripple the online battle mode? Here's hoping that part of the reason for the game's delay is that it is having a more robust online mode added to it.

I also heard a bit of talk over at AnimeLeague that Peach's Final Smash causes a bit of a conflict with Jigglypuff. You see, if Peach has a sleep-based Final Smash, then what does Jigglypuff have? Hopefully we'll see something else, like perhaps a Pokemon attack not yet seen in Smash Bros. While I'm disappointed by the lack of waggle in the Wiimote control scheme, people shouldn't get too riled about it. After all, not every game can have motion controls. Some games simply work better with plain old gaming controls. Even so, the inclusion of an awkward Wiimote control scheme like that is annoying. No serious gamer will play with it, so it seems to just be a way to advertise the game to casual consumers.

Team Rocket's blasting off agaaaaaainnn... *Bwink*

Japanese Anime Creators Organize First Union

As of October 13, over 500 anime directors, animators, artists, and other workers have officially established the first ever Japanese union for animators, the Japan Animator's Creation Association, also known as JAniCA. There were various prominent creators in attendance at the recent press conference held by the organization. Toyoo Ashida (director of Vampire Hunter D, the first movie and second TV series of Fist of the North Star) is the president of the union, and Satoshi Kon (director of Paranoia Agent and Millenium Actress), animation directors Moriyasu Taniguchi (Shaman King) and Akihiro Kanayama (Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam), Yasuki Hamano (a professor at Tokyo University), and editor Nobuyuki Takahashi (Ringu, Juon: The Grudge) all spoke to the press during the conference.

According to JAniCA, a storyboard works for an average of 3,360,000 yen (US$28,800) a year, without vacation, and a key animator works for 2,160,000 yen (US$18,400) a year, with no vacation. As most of you have figured out, this organization plans to work for the improvement of the working conditions for the men and women who create all that wonderful anime you all love to watch.

Dojo Day: Super-Speed Edition

Sonic vs. Mario Again, I am sorry about the lateness, but hopefully it will make up for it with the content released this week. This week is so big, we had two staff members comment on some of the new information! Welcome to this shocking Dojo Day, full of revelations and disappointments.

(Note from Vampt Vo: We kind of posted our articles at the same time, so I have included my version of the article, titled TBD Edition, on a page back in our Articles Section)

Zero Suit Samus-Special Moves: Zero Suit Samus’ standard smash attack is called a paralyzer. She shoots a blast from her gun, stunning her opponent. This attack is chargeable, and the more you charge it up, you can strike with additional attacks when you stun your foe. In her side smash attack, Samus utilizes her plasma whip. She can send the whip flying at enemies in different directions. This last attack can also be used as a way of recovering from a fall.

Wario Ware-Ashley’s Theme: This rather annoying musical number will probably be one of the many themes played in the Wario Ware stage.

Kirby-Final Smash: Finally, the specifics of Kirby’s final smash has been revealed. Ever since the trailer from November 2006, fans have wondered what actually occurs when Kirby pulls off his move, Cook Kirby. First, he puts on his good ‘ol chef hat and whips out his giant pot. Then, he smashes a spatula and a pot together, gathering enemies within his pot. He then begins to stir the ingredients together, and items from the Kirby game begin to pop out, followed by the damaged characters.

Nintendo Conference Fall 2007 Movie: Here we go, another movie. Nothing really new, but interesting to say the least. Besides gameplay footage, we also see Kyogre and Torchic are revealed as Pokemon that can appear out of Pokeballs. Kyogre flies onto the battlefield, blasting water at the fighters, while Torchic simply ignites on fire, but then jumps around the stage! Snorlax is also set to make a re-appearance. Lakitu looks like he will be an assist trophy, dropping Spinies onto the brawl-field. Also, it should be noted that Lucas may not be a clone of Ness, as one of his attacks was a move that sent a psychic hexagon upward, somewhat different from a typical Ness move.

Sonic: The long-awaited arrival of SEGA’s mascot has finally been revealed, as mentioned in a previous post.

Sonic the Hedgehog Joins the Brawl!- This is just a video showing Sonic and some of his gameplay dynamics. Sonic is now the fastest character in the game, but by the looks of things, his speed may be quite difficult to control. Also, the music playing in the background is Sonic’s theme, and may be the music in a Sonic-based stage. We can see some of his smash moves, and the ending of the video even hints at Super Sonic making an appearance as his Final Smash move.

Sonic: Special Moves- Sonic’s side smash move is Spin Dash, which he can curl into a ball and zip all over the screen. His down smash move is called a Spin Charge, which he can use to charge up his Spin Dash to make him even faster! However, his up smash move is by far the most interesting. It is called Spring Jump, which involves a typical Sonic-spring appearing under Sonic and flying him high into the air. The spring even stays on the stage for other characters to use. I’m guessing that the first one disappears when Sonic uses the move again. What happens when Sonic is off the ground and uses it? Will it appear and stay in midair?

Taking Snapshots- This is pretty interesting. Whenever you pause the game, you have the ability of adjusting the angle and zoom, and then taking and storing a snapshot.

New Launch and E for All- Unfortunately, the Super Smash Bros. Brawl release date has been pushed back. In North America, the game comes out on February 10th. Also, for the E for All event in Los Angeles on October 18th, the Nintendo booth will have a playable demo for the game, but with strict limitations of course.

This week was amazing, especially due to the cataclysmic revelation of Sonic as a playable character. IGN believes that Tails, his companion, may also be a playable character, but I find that too risky. He might make a nice assist trophy though. What do you think? Due to my love of Sonic, he will be my first character to play as when I get the game, followed by Pit and Lucas.

Asides from Sonic, we also had a lot of good news, along with disappointing news. Samus and Kirby had some moves revealed, which are interesting, but were expected. The snapshots are more interesting this time around, since in Melee they were hard to use and manage.

The video was nice, but there was not a lot of interesting stuff in it. If I missed any important information in the movie above, please comment. ^_^

The delay of the release date by about two months was a downer for most gamers. The dream of adding the game to their Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanzaa/Whatever list has now been flushed down the Nintendo drain. But, on the plus side, this gives the creators extra time to work out the tweaks and add last minute stuff to the game.

Well that’s all for now folks! Be sure to check back tomorrow, when I will post a special Dojo Day blog concerning the Nintendo Conference.

Dojo Day: TDB Edition

Sorry everybody, but this Dojo Day article is taking a while to write, so we have to delay it. You know, adding the name Sonic to the text requires another week of preparation. But hey, at least you'll be able to be able to read a half-finished version of this article at this year's E For All! You can take pictures of the article too! And at least for now you can settle for J-Vision, right? Welcome to Dojo Day.

Zero Suit Samus-Special Moves: Her moves are--sadly--100% paralyzer based, unlike normal Samus' diverse moveset. Special is a short range paralyzer shot, Side Special is a Plasma Whip, and Up Special is an enemy-grabbing Plasma Wire. The paralyzer can also grab onto ledges.

Kirby-Final Smash: As seen in the first Brawl trailer, Kirby's Final Smash involves him placing all of his enemies in a pot and boiling them into some horrible mass of burnt video game franchises and kirby-related items. Way to go Sakurai. Nobody noticed that your character gets to cook everybody else like they're nothing more than food!

WarioWare-Ashley’s Theme: This is the catchy little tune for WarioWare character Ashley, as seen in WarioWare Touched. While I liked the original on DS, I feel that the desire of the developers to remix it for Brawl has created a very inferior and artificial version.

Sonic: ZOMGZZZZ!11111!!!!1111!!!oneone! SONICIS IN BRAWL!!! I never would have expected THIS one! So there you go, fanboys. Now maybe you can stop playing Sonic Adventure 2: Battle long enough to play Brawl and realize that the former is, in fact, not the best game on the Gamecube. That title clearly belongs to Bratz: Rock Angels. Also, there's a video in here introducing Sonic. It's pretty cool, though we have to hear more of his horrible voice actor, and constantly be reminded that SEGA killed Sonic years ago.

Nintendo Conference Fall 2007 Movie: It's a pretty cool promotional video for the game that was shown at Nintendo's Fall Press Conference. This one's got our first footage of confirmed gameplay, as we can see damage counters on the bottom. There's a few unmentioned Pokemon in the video, as well as some nice footage of characters we haven't seen yet in video form. (i.e. Ike, Lucas)

Sonic: Special Moves: Guess what everybody! Sonic special moves...involve rolling...and SPINNING! So many surprises this week, I don't know what to do with myself. Side Special is a generic spinning dash, complete with aerial combos. Down Special is an apparently similar move which involves charging up a presumably horizontal-only (no combos) spin attack. Up Special is a spring jump that creates a spring for Sonic to jump off of. It will stay for a short time, allowing other players to use it.

New Launch and E for All: In classic guilty schoolboy fashion, they give us bad news coupled with an attempt to keep us happy. Brawl's new North American release date is on Febuary 10th, 2008. Sakurai cites a need for more development time, in order to "make the game the best it can be." As for the (kind of) good news, Brawl will be playable at the E for All Expo, the new public-attended replacement for E3. It will be held in the Los Angeles Convention Center beginning October 18.

Taking Snapshots: Remember all those times when you paused Melee during a funny scene (much to the chagrin of your friends) and wished you could take a picture? Well, now the underused Snapshot feature from Melee will be built into the pause screen of Brawl, allowing you to take pictures at any time and save them either to your Wii or an SD card. You can then send these images to friends over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. There is a blurred out feature that, according to the blog, is "still in development."

Well, this was sure an action-packed week. Even so, the end of this article will have to wait. I need some more development time to add buttons to my screenshot editor. You know, making a game is hard. And Sonic. Boy, is he hard to deal with. His agents want everything: cereal brands, billboard campaigns, McDonalds Happy Meal toys, you name it. The next thing you know, he'll be running Nintendo, and Iwata'll be out on the streets.

Sonic and the delay are obviously the big talks of the week, but let me put these two things out here. For one, Sonic was nearly guaranteed to be in the game. You can't have Snake from Konami, and not have Sonic from SEGA. Second, the delay is also not a huge surprise. Nintendo is notorious for delaying their games in order to spend more time for development. Anybody remember the nearly 2-year delay for Twilight Princess? So all you newcomers to the world of video games, wake up. Nintendo does this all the time. It's not some crime against humanity to delay Brawl so that they can make it a better game. If Nintendo released their games on time, you'd never play them--they'd all suck.

This delay is actually good for some gamers who aren't totally Brawl-obsessed. You see, now I have one less game to buy this holiday season, taking my already saturated list (BioShock, Super Mario Galaxy, Battalion Wars II, Oblivion) down. Believe me, when you have these games spread out, you'll feel better than having all of them condensed into the same spot. The only reason the delay bothers me is... well, I'll have to keep writing this column till February. The concept still makes me shudder.

Finally, I'd just like to say I'm loving the idea of screenshots. That was one of the most sorely needed (and rarely noticed in its absence) features of Melee. As for that mysterious button, I'm thinking something like an image editor or option to turn it into a sticker.

EA Buys BioWare, Gamers Cry

Madden Effect 08 Massive game publisher Electronic Arts announced on October 11th plans to purchase VG Holding Corp., the company that owns both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios. This assimilates BioWare, which is currently working on the highly-anticipated Xbox 360 exclusive RPG/Action game Mass Effect, and Pandemic, which is currently working on Mercenaries 2, into the EA developer's structure.

According to EA and Microsoft, Microsoft Game Studios will still publish Mass Effect exclusively on the 360, but the franchise, which was previously owned by BioWare, will now be owned by EA. This means that EA can conceivably publish any possible sequels to Mass Effect on multiple consoles, though the publisher has stated that they have no current plans to take Mass Effect beyond the Xbox 360. In addition, both BioWare and Pandemic will now publish under EA's "EA Games" label. Finally. EA plans to publish BioWare's mysterious MMO project within a general 2011 time window.

Electronic Arts held a conference call on Thursday discussing the acquisition, claiming that the move was "mutually beneficial" for all parties. EA CEO John Riccitiello said that EA can "reach places where [BioWare and Pandemic] don't get to so we can build their properties bigger," also admitting that action and RPG games are not EA's specialty, so these new developers would broaden their focus.

The gaming community (myself among it) was shocked and angered by this news. EA is notorious among gamers for caring more about making money than making good games. While the acquisition of BioWare could theoretically help improve EA's reputation, the most likely effect of this change will be for BioWare's talent to leave, giving EA just the BioWare name and the Mass Effect IP. Ironically, this saddening news comes just days after Bungie announced their independence from Microsoft.

Enjoy Mass Effect, gamers, because that will be BioWare's last hurrah in their current independent form.

Lucky Star/Haruhi Start Off AnimeLeague Review Sharing

AniGamers has just officially entered an exciting partnership with our friends at the AnimeLeague Reviewer's Scheme, a group of forum members who write reviews for the British anime forum AnimeLeague.

As of today, our two reviewing groups have started a review-sharing partnership in which I negotiate the trading of "guest reviews" with Arya, leader of the Reviewer's Scheme. It is only for anime right now, but will soon expand to video games. The first reviews to be shared are The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, shared from AniGamers to AnimeLeague, and Lucky Star, shared from AnimeLeague to AniGamers. This review-sharing agreement should be a great boon to both of our web sites, allowing us to simultaneously increase content and drive visitors to our sites, all while forging friendships with writers from other sites.

Summary
The plot centers around your 4 average Japanese high school girls, Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki. However, it mainly focuses on Konata who, despite having good athletic and organization skills, is lazy and would rather spend her time reading manga, watching anime, or playing video games than studying for her subjects. As Konata is a big anime fan, there are a lot of anime references in this series, including A LOT of Haruhi Suzumiya and many surprise appearances of the main character from Code Geass. As the series progresses, more characters appear in the series.

Animation
The animation is very cute and remains that way throughout the series. The characters have bright hair and eyes, and the background is just your general background. There’s a funny reference in one of the later episodes where two of the new characters mention that they're just “part of the background” and their colour turns dull, so that they blend with the background, which is funny!

Music and Sound
Opening Theme: Motteke! Sailor Fuku~! (Take It! Sailor Uniform~!)
The opening theme can either be liked a lot for its absolute randomness, or you can find it highly irritating. It’s completely different to what you'd normally hear for an opening theme. The lyrics are random, they have a random conversation as the “bridge” and then it gets to the main chorus. Personally, I love the music!

Since this isn't exactly an action series or romance series, only basic music is played, however the music can be random when it comes to a comedy moment. The sounds are quite unique, what I mean is when the characters have a “sweat drop” moment, the sound made for it is different to what is usually heard.

For the ending themes, the first 12 episodes are of the four main characters performing a karaoke of popular anime opening and ending themes, or Japanese singles. Some examples are “Cha La Head Cha La” from Dragonball Z and “That’s Love Right?” from Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu. After the random karaoke, the ending themes are...well...boring in my opinion. Most of them have Minori Shiraishi doing a random stunt somewhere, like on a cliff near the sea singing the main opening theme or something. I have no idea why they changed it to that; I loved the kareoke!

Personal Opinion
I wouldn't be reviewing this series if I didn't love it! I love the random comedic moments, and every Saturday I HAD to check online for the new subbed episode. The fact that there isn't that much plot in it is a good thing, because you can watch it when you want without missing too much.

The first 5 episodes I found quite boring compared to the later ones, in the first episode they spent about 5-10 minutes talking about how they eat ice cream and other foods. Thank goodness the light comedic conversations aren’t as long later on in the series.

Score
Plot - There isn't really a basic plot, it’s just for comedy, the anime references are fantastic and the whole friendship and life thing is [too. However, the Japanese references can be a bit hard to understand sometimes. 75/100
Characters - The characters are AWESOME! I love just about all of them, and everyone loves Konata. I haven't spoke to a person who doesn't! 80/100
Music and Sound - It’s pretty “meh” to me, but I like the opening theme. 78/100
Animation - Soooo cute! 85/100
Overall Score - Overall, it’s a hilarious series, I absolutely loved everything about it, but it is hard to understand if you’re new to anime or if you don't know much on Japanese culture, so this gets 79/100.

Animation: 3.0 Average:

(2.875 stars)
Plot: 2.5
Voice Acting: NR
Sound: 3.0
Overall: 3.0

Nintendo's Surprise Press Conference

Mario Kart Wii Nintendo pulled a fast one on us today, holding a Japanese press conference that caught most of the American gaming press off-guard. And believe me, this "Nintendo Conference Fall 2007" contained quite a large amount of Wii announcements. Here they are in bulleted form for your reading pleasure.

  • Monster Hunter 3, originally a PS3 title, will release on Wii, not PS3.
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl delayed until January 24, 2008 in Japan. The SSB Dojo changes its US release date to an ominous TBD.
  • As previously mentioned, Brawl will feature Sonic as a playable character. In addition, the game will allow online co-op in Subspace Emissary mode.
  • Mario Kart is set for a tentative Spring 2008 release window. Also, the game will include motorcycles.
  • Wii Fit will release on December 1, 2007 in Japan.
  • The Wii Vote (I'm assuming Everybody Votes) Channel will be updated with the ability to rank games you've played and search for new ones you're interested in.
  • The Wii will be able to send DS demos to your DS using Wii Ware functions.
  • First "Wii Ware" downloadable original games announced. Pokemon Bokujou (Pokemon Farm) allows you to transfer Diamond/Pearl Pokemon into a farm where you can raise them. A new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles game from Square Enix, titled The Young King and the Promised Land, allows you to build your own country. A new version of Dr. Mario that includes Miis and 4-player online is also part of the service. Mojipittan Wii, a word puzzle game from Bandai-Namco, and Star Soldier R were also announced.
  • You can play as your Miis in Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.
  • Super Mario Stadium Baseball briefly announced. Trailers shown for Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, and the new Crystal Chronicles
Anybody who can't find something that gets them a little excited in that list should be shot. Most of this has been predicted for a while, but in typical Nintendo fashion, they blew us away with how much they have given after such a long time of nothing at all. Going from no significant mention of Wii Ware to at least 5 titles coming out on the platform is a huge jump. Also, as I've been saying for months, the Wii is bound to start utlizing social networking fuctions. Well, here you have it, in the form of the soon-to-be-revamped Wii Vote Channel. Now, let's see if Nintendo can actually keep us interested in these new features, and not pull a "Friend Codes" on us. *crosses fingers*

Sonic Enters the Brawl Battlefield!

Sonic in Brawl Finally, after months of speculation, Sonic has been confirmed as a playable character in the upcoming Nintendo Wii game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Normally, we would wait until Dojo Day to announce a new character in the game, but Sonic's appearance in the game impacts the gaming community greatly. Being the second confirmed third-party character, Sega fans will be quite joyed to see their favorite blue hedgehog entering the Smash Bros. series for the first time.

On the Smash Bros. website, on October 10, they posted that Sonic has recently joined the roster of characters on the Brawl team, along with a gameplay video of the character. By far, Sonic may be the fastest character in the game, as he retains his speed from his other games. He also has the ability to curl into a ball, like in the games, and attack other players similar to Samus' move. Also, the video hints at a possible Final Smash for the character: a transformatin into Super Sonic! Well, that's all for now, and hopefully there will be more information on this character as the weeks go by. More information will be released during Dojo Day this week. 'Till then we'll all just have to wait!

Dojo Day: Irony Edition

Irony! Oh God I hate Super Smash Bros. so much! I hate it, and I'm not going to buy Brawl. As a matter of fact, I'll smash my Wii to pieces, so nobody can play Brawl on it. You know what? I'm just not going to write anything about that dumb game this week. Obviously it's stupid. I mean, it's not like there's tons of people anticipating it or anything. Geez. Friggin' Nintendo. Welcome to Dojo Day.

Lucas: Mother 3 fans, rejoice, because you've got another character from the Mother series. Those not familiar with the series should note that Ness is the main character of Earthbound (Mother 2), while Lucas is the protagonist of Mother 3. Earthbound had been released in America years ago, while Mother 3 has never seen a US release. Those hoping for this long-awaited release aren't totally unreasonable in thinking that the inclusion of Lucas just might show Nintendo's decision to finally translate and release Mother 3. Lucas seems to be very similar to Ness, and it is assumed that he is a clone character of Ness.

Shadow Moses Island: The MGS additions just keep getting better and better. Here we have Shadow Moses Island, the iconic Alaskan island that serves as the primary setting for the first Metal Gear Solid game. The stage has some nice dynamic effects such as destructable pillars and different Metal Gears appearing in the background. (possibly one of the newer models as well) In addition, there are some humorous conversations involving fellow Smash characters on Snake's codec with classic characters like the Colonel and Otacon. As far as I can tell, they have actually hired the original voice actors to voice the MGS characters as well.

Snake Joins the Brawl: A cool little video introducing Snake and showing some fighting scenes with him.

Excite Bike: OH NOES MOAR RETRO! Pixelated Excite Bikes ride across the screen and hit characters for this Assist Trophy. Also, a pixelated Spiny-throwing Lakitu will be an Assist Trophy.

Fox-Final Smash: Fox summons the mighty Landmaster tank, as seen in Starfox 64. He rides around, rolling to throw off enemies, shooting huge energy blasts, and generally causing mass chaos. This is a pretty cool addition, but as a Final Smash, I feel this is just not quick and effective enough. An Arwing bombing run would be much more useful.

Team: More expansions to Subspace Emissary? You'd think they actually want it to be a fully-featured single-player! Oh, they do? In Team mode, two players can play Subspace Emissary coop style, with the first player controlling movement and camera, while player two follows along within the camera window. It's a cool feature, and might make Subspace Emissary something more than "meh."

Wow, there was nothing interesting this week. Lucas sure isn't cool for Mother fans. And I'm definitely not excited about the fact that Mother 3 might come to the US. Shadow Moses: lame. There's no way I'd want to play a classic MGS stage designed by Hideo Kojima himself. Oh, and Team mode is stupid. Nobody'll ever play it. So, can I get a vote for who also hates Super Smash Bros.? Nobody? Oh come on! Last week we got a whole lot more here on The Unofficial Nintendo-Hater's Club Newsletter. What'd you say? This is DOJO DAY?

Oh... &#@%.

Bungie Free From Microsoft

Free Bungie It's official--Bungie Studios, which has been owned by Microsoft for years, has split from their parent company, in an agreement that turns Bungie Studios into the independent third party "Bungie, LLC." Microsoft will still hold a minority equity interest in Bungie, but they will no longer own the company. Bungie is now free to develop their own games as a third-party developer, and so can create any title on any console they want, though they will still remain in a lasting partnership with Microsoft.

This comes less than a week after Microsoft's release of Halo 3, which quickly became the highest grossing digital entertainment property in history after grossing over $300 million in its first week. It is important to note that Microsoft, not Bungie, still holds the rights to the lucrative Halo property.

“Working with Microsoft was great for us [...] But Bungie is like a shark. We have to keep moving to survive. We have to continually test ourselves, or we might as well be dolphins. Or manatees,” said Jason Jones, founder of Bungie. Well, I get the manatees thing, but I'd have to argue you guys are a bit more like whales, if you know what I mean.

This move is incredibly important and unprecedented. At no point in video game history has a studio that had been bought by a large publisher actually split off of its own decision. It is even more strange because Bungie is such a valuable asset to Microsoft, due to the Halo franchise. The most common idea of what happened is that Bungie's employees were being made to continually work on Halo games due to decisions made by Microsoft, and they were often not compensated for the huge amounts of profit they brought in. Bungie employees threatened to leave en masse if Microsoft did not allow them to become independent. However, no one has yet heard the full story from either Microsoft or Bungie.

I wish the best of luck to Bungie, and all of its employees, in their future pursuits.

Review: Le Chevalier D'Eon (Sub)

Le Chevalier D'Eon Media: TV Anime
Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Drama, Historical, Horror
Director: Kazuhiro Furuhashi
Studio: Production I.G
Number of Episodes: 24
Licensed? Yes (ADV)

How in the world can someone put together 18th century French history, Japanese animation, and zombies? Le Chevalier d'Eon shows us that anime has the flexibility to cover a wide range of genres that even occasionally leave the Land of the Rising Sun. Everything in Chevalier exudes quality. From the elaborate pacing to the incredible animation to the fantastic twists, this show is some serious high-quality stuff.

Roughly based on the true escapades of Charles-Geneviève-Louis-Auguste-André-Timothée Éon de Beaumont, often known simply as the Chevalier d'Eon, Le Chevalier d'Eon is a rich fantasy tale of deceit, loyalty, betrayal, friendship, and, uh... androgyny. d'Eon de Beaumont begins as a member of the French secret police, but when his sister Lia's body is found in a coffin floating down the River Seine, he joins the national spy organization known as "Le Secret du Roi," or "The King's Secret." Helping him are fellow spies Durand, a veteran of the King's Secret, Teillagory, a battle-hardened French knight, and Robin, the young aide to the Queen.

The "four musketeers" have come together in order to help the French Crown discover and reclaim the secret of the "Psalm of the King," a magical Bible psalm that chooses which King will rise to the throne. Incidentally, d'Eon finds that his sister's soul has been trapped inside of his body, and that when she uses him to recite the Psalm of the King, she takes over his body and attacks his enemies with a fearsome rage. As the four search Europe for evidence the secret of the psalm, and try to bring Lia's torubled soul to rest, they meet various "Poets," or those who have mastered the recitation of the psalms, and use them both to manipulate others and to fight. In addition, their enemies often use their psalms to turn innocent people into zombies full of mercury blood, using these creatures to fight off the musketeers.

Of course, much of this story is completely made-up, but many parts of it are based in reality. The characters meet up with real historical figures such as King Louis XV of France , Empress Elizabeth of Russia, and French revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre. In addition, d'Eon's sister and her soul's imprisonment in his body are based on the real d'Eon's real-life crossdressing, in which he claimed for much of his life that he was actually a woman named Lia de Beaumont. (He even used this for spying while under the King's Secret)

Production I.G, known for their huge portfolio of quality work on a large variety of series, did a great job with animating Le Chevalier d'Eon. The backgrounds, colors, and costumes are beautiful, and they often seem like they came out of an authentic European painting rather than an anime. As usual, I.G handles the animation brilliantly, providing consistently smooth movement. This is most evident during the action-packed swordfights that occur throughout the series, when the characters move with incredibly exciting and realistic energy.

The character designs are varied and very interesting looking, though they occasionally dip into lower quality. This change is jarring, and noticeable to even the least perceptive of viewers. In one scene, you will see a character's face beautifully lit and shadowed, and their face will wear a totally believable expression. The next, the art will seem strangely out of proportion, and the lighting will be cheap or nonexistant. Generally, though, the designs remain good enough for the occasional dips to be excusable.

Plot is the most important part of a series like Chevalier, and that is of course where it really makes an impact. Starting off with an internal plot to overthrow King Louis XV, the King's Secret soon find a conspiracy that spans across all of Europe. Screenwriter (and author of the original novel upon which the anime is based) Tow Ubukata rachets up the suspense in every episode, making Chevalier a joy to experience on the first go-through. Characters and development are often overlooked in epics like Le Chevalier d'Eon, but here we can find a huge and fascinating variety of characters. As each of them battles with the true meaning of their loyalty to France, we see the complex (and ever-changing) personal stories of the characters. D'Eon's story is quite interesting, as he at once battles and embraces the ever-growing presence of his sister inside of him However, in the stories of such characters as Empress Elizabeth, the disloyal Russian Voronzoff, the naive Robin, who faces various points of disillusionment with the glory of being a knight, and of course the two knights Durand and Teillagory, both of whom are torn apart inside by a conflict between political and personal loyalties.

In addition, the highly fantasy-based plot manages to cleverly weave in real historical figures and events to achieve a strange sense of historical accuracy in a world of possesive spirits, zombies, and magical psalms. For example, the real Chevalier d'Eon dressed up as a woman named Lia de Beaumont, and using this guise, became a valued advisor to Empress Elizabth of Russia. (as well as a French spy and ambassador) In the anime, Elizabeth often mentions her close bond with d'Eon's sister Lia. It's those sorts of clever references, along with a suspenseful plot and some amazing twists at the end, that make Le Chevalier d'Eon so enjoyable.

Near the end, however, the only problem with the plot arises. With all of its intricate plotting and interesting elements, Chevalier cannot escape its inevitable flaw: overcomplication. At the end of the series, when all of the plotlines come together, director Kazuhiro Furuhashi takes his viewers on a strange, often surreal journey in which little makes sense. While the animation might be great and the understandable parts fascinating, all of the talk of psalms and kings and souls becomes a tad too convoluted.

The Japanese dub is fairly good, with everyone giving a fairly dramatic and interesting performance. Robin and Robespierre's VAs are particularly good, exuding immature naivety and creepiness, respectively.

The music is another great facet of this series. The score for Le Chevalier d'Eon is beautiful, and its violins and other classical instruments help to hold up the time period that the entire series tries to reproduce. Of course, the score is also used for raising the suspense, to great effect.

Le Chevalier d'Eon is one of the best anime released in America in 2007. Its brilliant mix of historical fiction, horror, action, and suspense create a compelling tale that is both superficially entertaining in its action scenes, and intellectually stimulating in its intrigue. It suffers from some unever character designs, and the ending is slightly convoluted, but viewers will still find an entertaining experience in it. Chevalier is a highly underrated modern anime classic, mostly due to its odd choice of setting. Those looking for intelligent storytelling and beautiful animation need look no further than the gem that is Le Chevalier d'Eon.

Animation: 3.5 Average:

Plot: 3.5
Voice Acting: 3.0
Sound: 3.5

40GB PS3 A Rumor No More

Playstation 3 The highly-rumored 40 Gigabyte Playstation 3 has finally been announced, though as of right now it is for Europe only. SCEE announced yesterday in a megaton press release that the 40GB PS3 will launch on October 10 (or 10 October if you Europeans want to get technical) in all European territories, at the "attractive price" of €399. Attractive indeed. However, the newest iteration of the console loses 2 of its 4 USB ports, the multi memory card slot, backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games, and, in fact, 20 Gigabytes of hard drive space. (Who'd have thought?) Arguably, the new 80GB also loses backward compatibility, so that this one does as well shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

As for American gamers looking to get some game on with a new (and cheaper) Playstation 3, SCEA has not as of yet announced anything about an American release of this SKU. It's only a matter of time though, and most gamers are hoping for and predicting a $399 model, which would place the PS3 in a spot to finally compete with the Xbox 360 this holiday season.

EDIT: Typo fix. I didn't mean to start rampant rumors of a 4GB PS3.

Design an ARG to Support Cancer Research

Let's Change the Game Logo ARGs, or Alternate Reality Games, are large-scale games that use mass media such as the internet and newspapers to relay game information to players, who must discover clues and solve riddles to proceed. Their fans are often very dedicated and they place large amounts of time, money, and attention into them. With Let's Change the Game, though, some developers are trying to turn this rabid fanbase to help support the important work done by Cancer Research UK.

At their site, you can send a 500-word proposal for a new ARG. The winning teams receive £1300 ($2600) and all of the resources of Cancer Research UK to develop their ARG. The people at Let's Change the Game claim that these resources "could result in one of the biggest ARGs, ever."

Those interested can form a team and send in their proposal at Let's Change the Game. I'm loving the idea of playing in an ARG that allows each of us to have an impact on the important work of researching cancer. People talk about creating games with real-world messages, but they should look no further than this very ARG.

Three Kingdom Hearts Titles Announced

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep You heard right. It's not quite Kingdom Hearts III, but Tetsuya Nomura, a video game director and character designer for Square Enix, has revealed information on not one, not two, but THREE new portable Kingdom Hearts games.

The first game introduced is Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. This Nintendo DS game focuses on the character Roxas from Kingdom Heart's sequel game. The game takes place during the Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories timeline; when Sora has entered a deep sleep and before he enters Castle Oblivion. An interesting and new perspective to the game series is that this game will be multiplayer. This game has a preference which allows you to play with three other people and become one of the members of Organization XIII when you work as a team to complete missions. Tetsuya also hints that a new fourteenth member of the Organization will make an appearance, and that she is a female character.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep for the PSP introduces three new protagonists to the series. This is considered to be a prologue for the series, taking place ten years before the events of Kingdom Hearts, and focuses on the previous Keyblade master before Sora comes into the picture. The secret videos from Kingdom Hearts II and Final Mix + are previews to this game. The story is about three Keyblade apprentices, Terra, Ven, and Aqua (Earth, Wind, and Water), on their journey in search for a missing Keyblade master, Master Xehanort, and his apprentice.

Finally, Kingdom Hearts: Coded, for mobile phones, focuses on King Mickey after the events that occur in Kingdom Hearts II. Not much has been released about this game, but like most cell phone games, it may not be a great sucess for the Square team, but I could be wrong.

Well, Kingdom Hearts fans were thrilled after hearing this news, but there are a few things I need to mention. As of now, the games are only set to be released in Japan, but Square Enix plans to release this game in other countries for a worldwide profit. Also, all of these titles are tentative and may change before the final product is developed. That's all for now. I'll keep you posted when more Kingdom Hearts information arises.

Dojo Day: EXTREMELY Late Edition

Mr. Resetti I'm sorry this article is a little late, but better late than never. I've been a little preoccupied lately, and I hate to admit it, but I lost my password for a time. Without further adieau, Welcome to Dojo Day.

Trophies: Basically the trophies have returned from the previous game but with a couple of new, simple features.

Diddy Kong-Final Smash: Rocket Barrel Barrage is an attack where Diddy Kong flies around with his Rocket Barrel Boost, shooting his Peanut Popgun to shoot directly under him in a continuous barrage. Just like Diddy Kong’s original attack, the Rocket Barrel Boost explodes when time runs out and Diddy Kong can eat the discarded peanuts to restore health.

Mr. Resetti Basically, he’s an assist trophy that makes a text box appear and what he does best begins: he talks, talks, and talks some more. This isn’t that useful and I’m probably going to end up hating him in this game almost as much as I do in Animal Crossing.

Pokémon Trainer-Final Smash: Alright, Triple Finish is a move which uses all three Pokemon characters. Who would’ve thought that? The three Pokemon join forces and collect, while Squirtle uses Hydro Pump, Ivysaur does Solar Beam, and Charizard attacks with Fire Blast.

Tourney: Basically, Tournament mode from Melee with a bunch of new bonus features.

Overall, this week was not very interesting. The trophies return, yes those dreaded collective items are back! And tournament mode is back, which everyone probably assumed from the beginnning. To top that off, Mr. Resetti is a cool appearance in the game, but pretty useless in battle. However, we did get two new final smashes which on the scale, aren't very interesting.

Again, I apologize to both the audience and the staff for my late-ness and hopefully I will not be doing it again.
