Higurashi To Get Third Season

Animate.tv apparently doesn't think so, as the official Higurashi no Naku Koro ni blog has just announced a third season of the twisted horror mystery anime. Based on a series of non-H doujinshi mystery games, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni gained popularity both in Japan and the U.S. for its unusual storytelling style and shocking plot twists. The second season, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, was nearly complete when the final episodes were pulled from Japanese TV due to real-life reenactments of events from the series.

While I watched the entire first season and thoroughly enjoyed it, I have yet to complete what has been released of the second. The plot has been thrilling and fast-paced so far, but I have my reservations about the novelty of Higurashi being able to stretch itself over more than 50 episodes.

EDIT: The blog also said that a 2008 release was likely for the new season.
