Well, I guess I should be excited that we got Diddy Kong, but unless he's really a ninja monkey, which I highly doubt, then I'm not particularly interested in him. Anyway, this week wasn't huge (unless you're one of those freaky Donkey Kong fans), since we had one new character, and a bunch of basic updates to previous characters, stages, and such.
Link-Special Moves: While Link looks cooler now, his moveset is generally the same as in Melee. Although now his Hookshot is a Clawshot, and the Boomerang has become the Gale Boomerang (which can catch opponents in a gust of wind), there's not much new stuff here.
The Subspace Army: The Subspace Army, which attacks in the beginning of story mode, is ruled by a villain called the Ancient Minister, and staffed by hundreds of those weird little guys from before, now called the Primid. The Subspace Army attacks different locales, and, with the help of some R.O.B.s (now they're re-reviving retro?), they set off a "Subspace Bomb" that sucks the entire area into "Subspace." Confused yet? Watch the overly dramatic video to make your head explode with the craziness of it all.
Diddy Kong: Yep, he's here. Donkey Kong's wimpy little sidekick is a character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He weilds his Rocketbarrel Boost and Peanut Pop Gun (don't ask) and according to Sakurai, has a very weird, almost monkeylike way of moving around the stage.
Yoshi-Final Smash: With the help of the Smash Ball, Yoshi finally gets to live out her lifelong dream of doing something legitimately cool! Finally, Yoshi gets to grow wings, fly, and shoot fire at Mario. "That'll teach you to sit on me, you fat slob!"
Animal Crossing-Go K.K. Rider!: A cool little remix of Animal Crossing's Go K.K. Rider, which (for some random trivia) was influenced by the music from the Power Rangers-esque Japanese TV show Kamen Rider.
Petey Piranha: In the "Subspace Emmisary" story mode, Mario and company will fight the huge Piranha Plant from Mario Bros., Petey Piranha. He holds Princesses Peach and Zelda in cages, and uses them as weapons. Interestingly, you can choose which one to save, and the other one... well, we'll assume the worst.
While I should be excited about Diddy Kong, it's really not that important to me. Of course, the more the merrier, but this is nothing special unless you're one of the few people who enjoy any game where DK is the hero. I'm also enjoying the increasing Twilight Princess-ness of the new Link. And as for Subspace Emmisary, the more I see of it, the more forgettable it looks. Sakurai and his team shouldn't be trying so hard on the story mode, seeing as Super Smash Bros. is really a fighter, and has never needed a strong story. Well, I guess it can't hurt, as long as the story mode gameplay doesn't involve killing ReDeads and Octorocks.
