Holiday Giveaway: Ayako by Osamu Tezuka

Ayako, by Osamu Tezuka

The holiday season is upon us, so in keeping with the spirit of this time of year, we want to give away some gifts to our wonderful readers. Thanks to the folks at Vertical, Inc., I've got two copies of Osamu Tezuka's manga Ayako (1972) sitting right next to me, and I need to select two lucky winners to receive this brand-new, hardcover English release from the "god of manga." (Note that one of these is the review copy that I read in order to write my upcoming review of the book. It is still in near-perfect condition.)

How can you win one of these fabulous prizes, you ask? Well, just leave us a comment below this post telling us about the best geek-related gift you've ever received (or given to someone else) for any occasion — not just the holidays. Extra points for anime, manga, or game-related ones, but you can stray outside of that if you want. Make sure to leave some form of contact information, because we'll be picking our two favorite entries from the comments section and sending those people copies of Ayako!

The deadline for this contest is 11:59 PM on December 30, 2010, so you've got time to report back about any gifts you might receive this year. Best of luck! Oh, and before I forget: all of us at Ani-Gamers would like to wish our readers a happy and healthy holiday season. We hope you'll keep reading for the next two weeks as we roll out our Anime Secret Santa reviews and 2010 Staff Picks.

Let the year-end festivities begin!

Happy Holidays from the Ani-Gamers crew!

We've heard from some sources that 2009 is coming to a close very soon, so we here at Ani-Gamers thought we would welcome in the new year with something a little more exciting than our typical blog posts.

For those of you who were with us last year, you may remember a series of posts we ran called "Ani-Gamers' Top 3," wherein our staff chose their three favorite anime, manga, and video games of the year. This year, I've decided to change it up, since we have a larger and more varied staff that will most likely not reach a conclusion in any of the three categories. Thus, we will be posting each staff member's favorite two titles from this year, be they anime, manga, or video game.

However, putting them all in one post was just too boring, so we'll be posting each writer's choices day by day until we reach the end of the year. That's seven days, starting on Christmas, with two choices every day. If you're looking for some more holiday cheer, our resident Ebeneezer Scrooge (i.e. me) will be reviewing Kannagi (a moé show – my favorite) on Christmas Eve as a part of the Reverse Thieves' "Secret Santa Project," and our bloggers may very well be posting holiday-related posts throughout the next two weeks.

So come while away your holiday/new year's festivities with us this year! After all, spending valuable time with your family and friends is secondary to reading and commenting on a silly Internet blog.

And so begins the Anime Secret Santa Project!

Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens

Clearly I've been more naughty than nice this year. It's the only thing that makes sense, considering the three anime chosen for me by my "Anime Secret Santa." The project, run by the Reverse Thieves, has a wide cross-section of anime bloggers trading review requests Secret Santa-style, with the goal of the choices being things that the reviewer on the receiving end might like despite having never seen before.

Somebody, however, is not out to make my Christmas a happy one. Whoever you are, my undercover friend, you should know right now that I shall never forgive you for what you have done. I shall hunt you to the ends of the earth, though you may hide behind the guise of Internet anonymity. "Why the hatred?" my readers might ask. "Why this open loathing for one whom you have never met?"

The reason, as the more astute among you may have already guessed, is that my Anime Secret Santa has had the courage (and cruelty) to request not one, not two, but THREE anime series straight out of the bowels of the dread spectre of moé (not exactly my favorite genre, to put it lightly). My friends, I am now tasked with choosing between Air, Kannagi, and True Tears.

So let it be known that I accept your challenge, oh mysterious fellow blogger. My poison of choice is Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens, the Next Big Thing from Haruhi director Yutaka Yamamoto. I am prepared to stare without fear into the gaping maw of the moé menace. Do your worst.

My review of Kannagi will be posted on or around December 24. The pairings for the Secret Santa Project will be revealed on the 25th.

Happy Thanksgiving from us!

TURKEYYYYY!

Well, Black Friday is coming to a close, and we're sure that your stomachs are full and your wallets empty. The entire Ani-Gamers staff hopes that everybody had a happy Thanksgiving, and hopefully grabbed some sweet deals on anime, manga, and games today. (Remember, Amazon's got some sweet deals going all weekend, and RightStuf has a 30% off sale going until December 7)

I will be away for the rest of the day tomorrow, but around 1PM you'll be able to find my Mirror's Edge review. I worked long and hard on it, so make sure you read it, ya hear? Oh, and if you're seeing family members this weekend who are into anime and/or games, you can, y'know... slip them our URL. We're always looking for new readers!

Anyway, how was everybody's Thanksgiving/Black Friday? Did you fill up on turkey? Get trampled trying to buy games at insane low prices? Let us know in the comments.
