I recently watched this movie on Netflix as well, and I thought it was pretty damn good. In a way it doesn't quite feel like a stand-alone story, since it works under the assumption that you're already familiar with Black Jack and Pinoko, but as a movie for fans of Tezuka's series, it certainly doesn't disappoint.

I love your description of Black Jack as being the knife that cuts through the two opposing forces of the story. Indeed, many of Tezuka's most beloved characters (Astro Boy, Black Jack, Kenichi, even the hero-turned-villain Rock Holmes) take strength from their ability to straddle two different worlds, ideologies, nations, or races.

I'd also like to point out a very important staff team-up in this: director Osamu Dezaki and animation director/character designer Akio Sugino. These are the guys who made both the first Golgo 13 movie and its OAV sequel, Queen Bee, so f you enjoyed this movie, definitely try Golgo 13. In fact, this BJ movie is part of the reason why people often describe Black Jack (somewhat inaccurately) as "Golgo 13 with a scalpel."Evan Minto (Vampt Vo)https://www.blogger.com/profile/02857859638709251077noreply@blogger.com
